Most pallets are just pallets. They move product from point A to point B and nobody thinks twice about where they've been or what was on them before. But if your operation handles food, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, or chemicals — that history matters. A lot.

Food grade and pharmaceutical pallets are a separate category, and Houston has more facilities that need them than most people realize. The Ship Channel corridor, Baytown's industrial parks, and La Porte's distribution operations run a significant volume of regulated product. If your facility is one of them, here's what you need to know.

What Makes a Pallet "Food Grade"?

There's no single universal certification called "food grade pallet," but the term has a practical meaning that most operations understand. A food grade pallet is a wooden pallet with a documented, clean history — no exposure to chemicals, pesticides, or contaminated product, no visible staining or odor from previous loads, and no structural damage that could create a splinter or debris risk for product sitting on top of it.

The FDA doesn't certify pallets directly, but FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) requires food facilities to manage the risk of contamination from packaging materials — and that includes pallets. Your food safety auditor will look at what you're using to store and move product. If you can't show they're clean and controlled, that's a finding.

For most food-grade applications, what you need is pallets that are clearly separated from the general pool — known origin, visual inspection, no chemical exposure. MGM Pallets can sort and supply pallets that meet this standard, separated from our general Grade A/B inventory.

What About Pharmaceutical Pallets?

Pharmaceutical distribution has stricter handling requirements than food. GDP (Good Distribution Practice) guidelines require that pharmaceutical products be protected from contamination throughout the supply chain, including the pallets they ride on. If your facility distributes medications, medical devices, or biotech products, your pallet standard is higher than a standard warehouse operation.

In practice, this means clean pallets with no prior chemical or agricultural exposure, documentation that supports your traceability requirements, and consistent quality so you're not dealing with board gaps or nail protrusion that could damage packaging. Several pharmaceutical distribution facilities in the Baytown and La Porte area have been using MGM Pallets specifically because we can provide this level of documentation and consistency.

Why Houston Facilities Use MGM Pallets for Specialty Stock

The Ship Channel area has a concentration of food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and industrial operations that's unusual even by Texas standards. Baytown alone has major petrochemical plants, food distribution operations, and industrial manufacturers all within a few miles of each other. La Porte and Deer Park run similar mixed-use industrial profiles.

Most pallet suppliers in the area run a general pool — you get what they have, sorted by grade, and that's it. We can separate a dedicated supply of clean-history pallets for facilities that need documented stock. It's not a separate product line with a premium markup — it's a matter of how we sort and what we keep track of. Call us and tell us your requirement. We'll tell you honestly if we can meet it and what the volume looks like.

Same-week delivery is available to Baytown, La Porte, Deer Park, Pasadena, and the Ship Channel corridor six days a week. If you're in a pinch — an audit coming up, a supplier that fell through, a volume spike — we can usually get sorted specialty stock to you faster than you'd expect from a supplier this size.
